Here’s what’s happening. Several hundred trumpeter swans winter at Summer Lake Wildlife Area in Oregon. It is an important Rocky Mountain Population wintering area for trumpeter swans from Canada and the Rocky Mountain west.
On their way, they are feeding and resting in places that are largely unknown. It is not known where these swans spend the summer to raise a family. It is not known if migration routes pass through tundra swan hunt zones.
A GPS tracking collar answers these important questions.
The consequences of not knowing where wintering western swans are through the year means that these areas may not be safe for swans nor excluded from future hunt zones.
