Links
We try to keep current the best list
of Trumpeter Swan and other swan links available on the web.
Our links are organized first by geography, followed by some other categories.
Within each country in North America the links are organized primarily
by the population of Trumpeter Swans (Pacific Coast, Rocky Mountain, Interior,
or Atlantic), and within that, by state or province. Links which have
general geographic affinities (for example they might cover a whole country
or a whole population) are placed at the appropriate level.
For your added convenience, we have two versions of our links. Directly
below is a "quicklist" of links so you can quickly see how they are organized
and check some out. Further down this page we have the same links "annotated"
with accompanying descriptions, in many cases including a series of related
links or individual pages at that site. The red text below will take you
directly to this annotated list. We encourage you to use the annotated
list as it will probably point you in the right direction much faster
than the "quicklist."
If you have any comments or suggestions for links to add, please send
them to ttss@threeriversparkdistrict.org

INTERNATIONAL
Wetlands International -- Africa,
Europe, and the Middle East
Wetlands International is the world's leading non-profit organisation
concerned with the conservation of wetlands and wetland species. It
comprises a global network of governmental and non-governmental experts
working on wetlands. Activities are undertaken in more than 120 countries
worldwide. Wetlands International has a number of specialist groups including a swan specialists group which deals with all the world's species of swans.
TTSS member and former Board member Carl Mitchell is the swan specialist
group's regional coordinator for North America as well as the Trumpeter
Swan coordinator. Wetlands international has regional sites covering
various parts of the world. This site has been completely updated (late
January, 2000) and is really a MUST to explore! Overall, this is a
great site to start any search for wetland or waterbird information
for anywhere in the world!
American Bird Conservancy
American Bird Conservancy (ABC) is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit dedicated
to the conservation of wild birds and their habitats in the Americas.
The fundamental role of ABC is to build coalitions of conservation
groups, scientists, and members of the public, to tackle key bird
priorities using the best resources available. In March 2004, the ABC Policy Council voted to expand into the new Bird Conservation Alliance (BCA). BCA will be working to champion bird conservation issues in the Americas. Outside of the U. S., more than 300 bird species in the Americas are threatened with extinction and bird habitat is in great decline. The Trumpeter Swan
Society is a member of the BCA.

Trumpeter
Swan Account --- Patuxent Bird Identification InfoCenter
A few identification tips and scraps of life history as well as distribution
maps derived from the North American Breeding Bird Survey and the
National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count. Neither map includes
Alaska or Canada north of 60 degrees.
Patuxent's USGS Bird Banding Laboratory
Everything you ever wanted to know about bird banding, including how
to report banded birds by using the toll
free band reporting hotline. Most of this site is aimed at bird
banders, but check out the Bird
Monitoring Page for a wealth of good stuff that is of more general
interest. By the way, if you want information about the Canadian
Bird Banding Office, you will find it safely (but deeply) nested
in the Canadian
Wildlife Service web site.
Trumpeter
Swan Account -- National Audubon Society WatchList
Check out the short Trumpeter account here. But more important, find
out how the Trumpeter scores compared to other birds on the Watchlist,
and find out how these scores are determined using the Partners in
Flight Priortitization Process. This site has lots of great links.

Trumpeter Swan
Account from Hinterland Who's Who
An excellent species account from the popular Hinterland's
Who's Who series of the Canadian
Wildlife Service (available in English
or French).
This account was written by TTSS members Rick McKelvey and Len Shandruk.
Right next door to the Trumpeter account you'll find an equally good one
on the Tundra
Swan. Don't forget to check out the rest of the information-packed
CWS site!
Trumpeter Swan
Account -- Canadian Museum of Nature
Short species account from the Natural
History Notebooks of the Canadian Museum
of Nature.
Trumpeter
Swan account from the National Atlas of Canada.
This short account is buried very deep in the main National
Atlas of Canada site, which is a wealth of information about Canada.
Trumpeter
Swan Account -- Feathers on Water Virtual Exhibition
This is from Feathers
on Water site developed by the Musée du Séminaire de Sherbrooke.
Feathers on Water in turn is part of "Birds-
A Virtual Exhibition" ...... which is found deep in the Canadian
Heritage Information Network site. The Trumpeter account itself is short
and has some misinformation (for example it suggests Trumpeters routinely
frequent the Mackenzie River Delta!!!), but you'll find a wealth of other
information. If you take the time to explore this labyrinthe of sites you'll
understand why the term world wide WEB is used!

Bewick's and Whooper
Swans at Lake Hyoko, Japan
About 5,000 swans winter on this lake, where they are supported by artificial
feeding.
Iceland to Ireland
Satellite Tracking of Whooper Swans
This incredible map shows the path of a Whooper Swan flying from Iceland
to the north coast of Ireland during 15-16 November, 1995. Apparently this
bird spent the night of 15 November sitting in the open ocean??? You have
to be a bit patient with this as the map is a bloated 140k .jpg image.
